My first post!

Alright, lets get started! This is my first post and I just wanted to tell you a little about what I’m going to post here.

I made this as a place where I can basically just write what’s on my mind. Twitter is great, but I find that I can’t always get my point across in >140 chars. Other than that, I’ll also be posting reviews of stuff (mostly games, apps, and movies).

That’s all for today, so thanks for the read.

iPods and Jailbreaking

•04/14/2009 • Leave a Comment

The iPod Touch, or iTouch if you prefer, has been out for a long while now. Most people have either the first or second gen iPod Touch and the iPhone is quickly becoming one of the best selling phones ever. I’m sure I don’t have to convince you about why you should buy one, but I would like to convince you about something else: jailbreaking.

OVERVIEW

Jailbreaking, if you don’t know, gives you the ability to install non-Apple approved applications. Through jailbreaking an app store-like program is installed. With this application called Cydia you can install basically anything you wamt. For example, if you own an iPhone you can install something as simple as a theme, which will change the look of your icons, to something pretty complex like an app that can play GameBoy games.

CONS (or lack of them)

Now you’ve heard this all before but most people say that they don’t want to take the risk. They complain that they don’t want to ruin a 300 device. I’ll start off by saying YOU CAN NOT PERMANENTLY DAMAGE YOUR DEVICE. EVER. No matter how much you screw up or don’t follow directions, you can return your device to it’s original state in about 30 minutes.

PROS

I’ve jailbroken my iPod about 7 or 8 times by now and I couldn’t be any happier. As a jailbreaker, I’ve had access to things some people would never think of. I am able to try any app before I buy it (Installous), I can install themes and make my iPod different than anyone elses (Winterboard), or even play a quick game of Advanced Wars (gpSPhone).

THE PROCESS

You can jailbreak your device (all are supported accept the second gen iPod Touch) by searching for QuickPwn. The program supports both Windows and Mac (Linux users like myself will have to use a friend’s). Quickpwn has instructions built in and should have your iPod/iPhone jailbroken in about 5 minutes. If you find that the whole jailbreaking scene is not for you, or if you really mess up your device, just hook it up to your computer and restore it.

Thanks much,
Vinny

(P.S.: I wrote this completely from my iPod. :)
